Neighborhood Songs

       It’s that one song or maybe many

       That takes you to a place and time. 

       Could be a love song,  

       A romantic ballad from the mid 1990’s.

       Played on a  local station over and over, 

       On your way to high school,

        On the bus, the CD spinning on your discman,

        Visiting a friend who lived just blocks away from campus.

        30 years later, passing through this part of Queens,

        Or even hearing friends and neighbors talk of this area,

       This  particular song pops in your head. 

        Like so many neighborhoods in New York where you grew up      

        and till this day call home,

        Different areas cary different songs

       That remind you of the buildings,  the houses, streets and shops,

       Creating a playlist of their own.
